Muvamo Opinion

Café Gloriette receives the Muvamo Award for seamlessly blending imperial history with modern Viennese coffee culture, offering unparalleled views and an authentic experience.

Café Gloriette is located at the highest point of Schönbrunn Palace Park, and it offers one of the best panoramic views of Vienna. After a leisurely walk through the palace gardens (which are free to access), we made our way up the hill to the Gloriette to enjoy our Sunday brunch. The walk to the Gloriette is somewhat challenging, yet it is undoubtedly rewarding. For those who prefer not to undertake the climb, a miniature train is available to transport you to the top.

The café’s interior is equally impressive, with its high ceilings and arched windows creating a regal atmosphere. While the outdoor terrace doesn’t offer a direct view of Schönbrunn Palace, it still provides a charming setting to enjoy your meal, surrounded by the lush greenery of the palace gardens. Dining outside in this tranquil environment made our brunch experience truly memorable.

The brunch menu was delightful, featuring a mix of Austrian classics and international options. We loved the freshly baked pastries and rich coffee, but there were also gluten-free and vegetarian choices, ensuring something for everyone.

We couldn’t resist ordering their signature Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy, shredded pancake sprinkled with powdered sugar and served with a side of rich stewed plums. It was the ultimate comfort food and perfectly complemented the café’s elegant setting.

Of course, we also had to try a slice of the iconic Sachertorte—a decadent chocolate cake with a thin layer of apricot jam, paired with a dollop of whipped cream.

Visiting Gloriette Café is essential, particularly if you are already exploring Schönbrunn Palace and its gardens.

Savor History with a View: The Story Behind Gloriette Café

The Gloriette was commissioned by Empress Maria Theresia in 1775 as a “temple of glory,” symbolizing the power and grandeur of the Habsburg Empire. Designed by architect Johann Ferdinand Hetzendorf von Hohenberg, it exemplifies early neoclassical architecture, with its grand arches and intricate sculptures. Over the years, it has served various purposes, including as a dining hall and a festive venue for the imperial family.

During World War II, the Gloriette suffered significant damage but was restored by 1947. A more comprehensive restoration took place in 1995, during which the central part was enclosed with glass panes, transforming it into the café we know today. This renovation aimed to preserve its historical essence while adapting it for contemporary use.

Café Gloriette offers culinary delights and serves as a cultural venue. Its Sunday brunches are accompanied by live music, ranging from classical compositions to jazz, creating a harmonious blend of gastronomy and art. The café has become a beloved destination, famous for its classic Viennese desserts and coffee. Its location atop the hill provides one of the best vantage points in Vienna, offering breathtaking views of the palace grounds and the cityscape beyond.
